About the Event
Background
Georgia was one of the first states selected in 2021 to participate in a national project promoting alternatives to guardianship though the Center on Youth Voice and Youth Choice (CYVYC) where 6 young Georgians became the first Youth Ambassadors for Supported Decision-Making in our state.
Youth DECIDE Georgia is a new project supported by the CareSource Foundation that grew out of I DECIDE Georgia, our state’s Supported Decision-Making project. I DECIDE Georgia is a coalition of advocates, organizations, and allies working together so that all Georgians, including people with disabilities, can make decisions, supported by people they trust, in order to live a life of dignity and autonomy.
In 2023, our new Youth Ambassadors were supported by seasoned Youth Mentors who participated in the first cohort with CYVYC in 2021. During our showcase, you'll also hear a few updates from our Youth Mentors about the work they continue to do as Ambassadors for Supported-Decision Making in Georgia:
- Angad Sahgal, Atlanta
- Darien Todd, Ellenwood
- Derek Heard, Albany
- Elisha McKenzie, Suwanee
- Joe Grillo, Sautee Nacoochee
- Leslie Thornton, St. Marys
